Professional Hopes and Goals

I will forever carry the lessons of this course with me, both personally and professionally.   I have had a-ha moments in this class just as I have in every other class.  As I continue my own diversity journey, it is my hope that I can share the lessons I learn along the way with my college students so they can offer just and equitable learning experiences to the children and families they will serve.  As a teacher educator, I also hope to encourage my students to embark journeys of their own.

A goal I have for the early childhood field is to broaden their horizons and always look beyond the surface!  Unfortunately, we continue to view multi-cultural education from the perspective of celebrations, language and ethnicity.  I would like to see our profession truly honor the diversity that is already present in every classroom by engaging our early educators in learning communities that explore the true nature of diversity, equity and social justice.  We all have so much to learn from each other that will benefit the children and families in our care.

Thank you to my fellow students for sharing your insight and experiences.  I have learned so much from each of you.  I appreciate the honest reflection everyone has engaged in as we have explored our own biases and what diversity means to our work.  I hope to continue working with you in our future classes!

  2. Teri,

You're right, some do tend to think of multi-cultural education from the perspective of celebrations, language, and ethnicity. It is our duty as educators to respect different cultures for everything they bring to the table beyond their celebrations, language and ethnicity.

Thank you for contributing to my learning throughout this course.
